The course designer was a tour player, cost goes up. The build contractor was convinced to build your property before he starts the one in another city, cost goes up. Change orders for the contractor, cost goes up. Irrigation man says triple row water system would be the best, cost goes up. Drainage guy just doubled the amount of basins, cost goes up. Seed man encourages the use of prototype, cost goes up. Mower man encourages you to keep those steep slopes, he has just the unit that can mow it, cost goes up. Sand from 150 miles south compacts better than the sand at local quarry, cost goes up.
You might be wondering, will we see a new public course built in our area, the answer is NO. Golf went through a brutal stretch. Everyone servicing the industry had to make sure “they got theirs”. It worked. They all got paid! The cost to build a course became astronomical. That’s not changing. The kicker is…most are uninspiring pieces of crap. No one thought to make inspiring golf, they simply did their little part, found ways to make a bit extra, and moved on looking for new ways to bamboozle the next unsuspecting owner.
There is so much unneeded extra nonsense in golf. I would like to make it simpler, cheaper, but golfers have been programmed. I was asked recently about more ball washers. Why do we need more ball washers? This is the problem.
