Growing up, a kid in my neighborhood I played with, had a dad who was a body builder at Gold’s Gym. He didn’t look like any of the other dads. This was the 80’s, and I imagine guys who went to that gym probably watched my friend’s dad train. Pretty simple formula…he is huge, I want to get huge, so maybe I should study everything the huge guy does. Maybe even go and talk to the huge guy, and ask him some questions. If people sense genuine interest, no matter how huge they are, they are always willing to stop and help.
Parallel this to golf. Have you stopped to study someone who is good. Have you tried to train your golf at the same time someone good is training golf, so you can study their movements? Have you tried to ask a good golfer questions? Have you asked whether you can play/workout with that good golfer? I don’t belong to a gym, but I imagine gym culture has changed. Bros with earbuds in, staring at their phones between sets; the universal sign of “don’t talk to me”. Instead of watching a guy work out every day, you now digest 10 seconds of a guy in Australia in perfect lighting, telling you the best way to build your traps. Shit, I gotta try that.
Golf is running parallel. People are afraid to play with good golfers. No one stops to watch great practicers. I mean why do that, when you can lay in bed at night and, death scroll for 30 minutes and then come out 5 days later, and layer 25 swing tips on top of each other that all claim to be the secret to golf. Nobody strong has claimed it all came from Tiktok, and nobody good at golf claimed it all came from Instagram. Stalk someone good, there is no better way.
